What is Scientology Anyway?!?!
March 16th, 2008
And why is it that everyone seems to have an opinion on it? Some people hate it, some people participate in it, other people just don’t know what it is, don’t know what the fuss is about and couldn’t care less…
I’m in the second group, you might be in the first or third, that’s OK by me, you don’t have to be a Scientologist, it’s totally your choice. But if you are in one of those groups, it might behoove you to go and watch some of the new videos that are now online that can explain to you, from us, who we are and what we do….
It’s actually an interesting site, it has lots of videos explaining our core beliefs (like what is Scientology Auditing) to our anti drug campaign over to our Volunteer Minister efforts.
It’s worth a look, even if it is to cut through all the media hoo-ha and see for yourself, in your own space, what us Scientologists believe and what we think about our life and yours.
One thing I do ask though… take the data for what it is. Information from Scientologists and the Scientology religion about our religion. It is fairly safe to say that we would know more about our religion than the sensationalist media or vested interest groups would.
So check it out.

To C… Thanks for telling me your story, I’ve kept it private. I really appreciate you telling me your thoughts about the subject and am willing to answer any questions you might have. I’m sorry to hear what happened, but I know, like many things, people improve and groups improve, so drop me a line if you want to.
Kind Regards
Mikel

If you want truthful information about an entity you should not rely on the information that current members of the entity give you. They might be interested in validating their own indoctrination.
However, scientology is a special case. You can rely on what scientology tells you, even if non-scientologists who have studied it are uniformly critical. Ex-members, who are also uniformly critical, really know nothing about scientology, whether they be OTVIII or not.

Rita got it right in the first paragraph.
Rita’s second paragraph is exactly what I find disturbing about Scientology. Anybody who says their particular belief system is the sole special case to the general rule they just stated about people in belief systems being biased and that the only reliable view is what is said by current practictioners of that belief system is inherently suspect. I call BS.

Ed & Rita, Thanks for your comments.
I actually hold a middle ground view, and I appreciate where you are both comming from.
My middle ground view is the same one that I hold on Scientology, Apple computer and any other thing that I evaluate.
I get opinions and comments from those around me, but from those people who I trust and sources that I trust, from these people I then decide if I want to try it out. “It” could be anything, Rails, Java, memcached or even Scientology.
Then I evaluate what I am looking at based on the facts and knowledge of my own personal experience. My personal experience always out weighs any opinion I receive, no matter the source.
In this day and age, with the mass controlled media and the level of advertising where it is at, the only true datums you can have are those you form yourself from your own experience.
So when I first found Scientology, I looked around, found some negative opinions, found some positive ones, decided that it is interesting enough for me to check it out, went and got one of the books, read it, and then some time later, slowly (over a few years) became a Scientologist (as in, I apply Scientology’s philosophy to my life).
Anyway, that’s my view. I mean, Hubbard even says as one of the opening chapters of The New Slant on Life>
“What is true for you is what you have observed yourself. And when you lose that, you have lost everything.”
Anyway, my 2 cents.
